Shakespeare’s Macbeth, reimagined and boldly adapted into an audacious opera by Giuseppe Verdi, one of the world's greatest operatic composers, is nothing short of epic.
The first of Verdi’s three Shakespearean operas (preceding Otello and Falstaff by decades), Macbeth premiered in 1847. It is a dark drama of ambition, greed, deceit, superstition, murder and political intrigue, heightened by ghosts, witches and the supernatural. In opera history, Macbeth was as revolutionary as Wagner’s Tannhäuser.
