About the event

The Philharmonic Orchestra presents part two of the Sibelius Symphony Cycle, showcasing both the familiar and unfamiliar aspects of his symphonic language. Symphony 4 is coupled with Symphony 2 to bring vastly contrasting moods and undertones into sharp relief.

The bright Second had sources of inspiration from Italy and the Mediterranean, and perhaps even from a new friendship. Axel Carpelan, the work's dedicatee, came to describe the symphony as a work 'with sunshine and blue, blue sky and jubilant happiness'. 120 years on, it is the most well-loved and oft-performed symphony by Sibelius.

The introspective Fourth however was born of the Finnish composer's deep dissatisfaction for "empty grandiloquence and empty materialism". Despite bewildering and challenging audiences both past and present, Sibelius was defiantly proud to have written this work - one that gave him great strength and satisfaction.
